Introduction

Beginnings

Ryu Seung-woo was born in Gimhae, South Korea. The first professional team of Ryu was Jeju United, which club he joined in 2014. Before, he attended the Chung-Ang University where he also played in the local team. He did not stay for long at Jeju; after only a month he joined the five-time German champion, UEFA Cup-winner and Champions League finalist Bayer Leverkusen on loan. Bayer signed him before Borussia Dortmund: a Dortmund supporter has
already prepared a welcome video for him – all for nothing.

He was already a player with name at this point. In the 2013 U20 World Cup he participated well and raised the attention of numerous scouts and managers. No wonder why as he scored already on his first appearance against Cuba. Three days later Korea equalized against Portugal with his rocket: he took a great role in qualifying for the knock-out stage. Due to his injury, the last match on the tournament was the third group match against Nigeria.

Bayer

During the first season at Leverkusen he proved his talent. He just arrived when against Heerenveen scored a goal in a training match. In the spring season he had his debut in the Bundesliga, too.

Simon Rolfes, his former team mate, said that he is a very intelligent player who moves great and uses space cleverly. Ryu is a very agile player with low center of gravity, who can change direction quickly. He can perform stunningly as attacking midfielder, on the
wings or as a shadow behind the forwards.

Following the loan period Bayer purchased his playing right and offered the 21-year old player with a professional contract.

Loan periods

For the next season Bayer gave Ryu on loan to Eintracht Braunshweig in Bundesliga II. In 16 appearances he scored four times and finished sixth with his team. Following the loan period he returned to Bayer and then left again on loan to Arminia Bielefeld to receive more playing opportunity.

National team

Ryu played regularly in the U19, U20 and U23 national teams. He won the Asia Cup with the U19 team, played in the World Cup with the U20 team and participated in the Olympics this year with the U23 national team. He scored on all three tournaments.

In the Rio Olympic Games he had three appearances and scored a hat-trick against Fiji. Since the Olympic-participant U23 teams can have some older players in the squad, the official national team debut of Ryu is yet to come.
