Our record-breaking men's football team has been further strengthened with the signing of Cadu, Bence Ötvös and Barnabás Nagy, and 26-year-old Australian international striker Daniel Arzani, who played in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia against Peru, Denmark and eventual winners France.
Introduction
Daniel Arzani was born on 4 January 1999 in Horramabad, capital of Lorestan Province in western Iran, but was first introduced to football in Australia with Eastern Suburbs FC. His talent was noticed early on, reaching the semi-finals with the Australian U16 team in 2014, and a year later, in 2015, he played in the U17 World Cup, where he took on Germany (the tournament's top scorer was Victor Osimhen, who won the gold medal with Nigeria with 10 goals).
In 2016, he joined the Sydney FC youth team and was signed by Melbourne City later that year. On 25 January 2018, he scored his first career league goal against Newcastle Jets. In the summer of 2018, he was part of Australia's squad for the World Cup, playing in all three group matches (France, Denmark, Peru) and playing a total of 60 minutes.
After the World Cup, he was signed by Manchester City, one of the Premier League's top teams, and then loaned out for two seasons to Scottish side Celtic, where he made his debut against Dundee FC on 31 October. He celebrated a Scottish league title at the end of the 2018/19 season. In his second season in Scotland, he was ruled out of action due to a serious injury.
After his loan contract expired, he returned to Manchester and City's management loaned him to Utrecht in the Netherlands, before transferring him to Danish club Aarhus six months later. He scored two assists in five games for the former, but also made six appearances for the U21 side, scoring once. At Aarhus he played 120 minutes in 5 matches.
After a loan spell in Denmark, he also spent a season with Belgian side Lommel SK, scoring 1 goal in 901 minutes in 15 matches. He then returned to Australia in the summer of 2022, signed for free by Macarthur, with whom he immediately won the Australian Cup. He left the club after one season, scoring 4 goals and 8 assists in 24 games.
In 2023, he joined Melbourne Victory. He had to wait until 16 December to score his first league goal for his former club Sydney FC. In 64 games for the Melbourne club, he has scored 7 goals and has 14 assists in 4,018 minutes played.
Interestingly, he has only scored once in the national team: on 9 June 2018 against Hungary, then under Georges Leekens, with Dénes Dibusz, the captain of the Hungarian team, on the line.
