Our 34-time champions men's football team visited Mezőkövesd in the 33rd and final round of the OTP Bank Liga. There was no stakes in the match, as we had already clinched our fifth title in a row weeks earlier, and 34th overall, while the home side had managed to secure a spot in the first division in the last round. Stanislav Cherchesov was without a number of players due to injury, so he opted for a starting line-up of Szécsi - Kaján, Abena, Knoester, Sagal - Esiti, Gojak, Zachariassen, Owusu, Mercier - Lisztes. Norbert Kaján and Gergő Szécsi started for the first time in the NB I.
First half
Kristoffer Zachariassen captained our team in this match, our Norwegian national team midfielder leading the team out on the pitch for the first time. In the fifth minute, Szécsi had to watch out for a rebounded free kick, and then a shot from home was blocked by Kaján. At the other end, Zachariassen's header missed the left post by inches. Shortly afterwards, after a combination of Kaján and Zachariassen, the onrushing Mercier had a chance to shoot but the ball was blocked and Kaján curled over.
In the 17th minute, Babunski crossed the half-court and shot wide from about 18 meters, while at the other end Mercier gave a great pass to Owusu, whose shot was blocked by the home goalkeeper. In the 39th minute, Mercier had another chance to shoot but the ball went over the bar. Two minutes later, the home side had a free kick from a dangerous position 17 meters from goal, but Babunksi's attempt missed the target. In the 45th minute, after a forward cross, Knoester lost a clearance to Drazic, and the home forward took the ball past Szécsi, who could only stop the striker with a foul leading to a penalty. Mezőkövesd had a rightful penalty, and the victim slotted the ball into the top left corner (1-0).
Second half
In the 55th minute, Abena's shot went over the top, and soon afterwards Cherchesov made two substitutions. Marquinhos replaced Owusu, while debutant Tóth Alex replaced Esit. In our goal, Lehoczky shot wide from the right in the 59th minute. A few minutes later, Zachariassen's shot went over the top, while at the other end a header from the home side went wide.
In the 68th minute, Mercier was brought down 18 meters from the goal. His shot into the goal was saved by Piscitelli. In the 72nd minute Nikolai Baden Frederiksen replaced Mercier. Our newcomer was in position after a few minutes, but the action was stopped by a foul. In the 79th minute Carlos Auzqui came on for Kaján. A minute later, Lisztes' cross was powerfully headed into the middle by Zachariassen, but after a scramble, we were again unlucky to get the ball in the net. At the end of the match Szécsi had to save. Finally, the four minutes of extra time brought no change to the result, we were left pointless.
All in all, our 34-time champion men's football team suffered a one-goal defeat in the last match of the season but defender its championship title once again.
