The Hungarian national team played against Iceland in the European Championship qualifying playoffs final. The Hungarians were awaiting a fully sold-out stadium, but due to the pandemic, the match had to be played behind closed gates, the astounding Puskás Arena was empty.
Three Fradi players were sitting on the bench – Dibusz Dénes, Sigér Dávid and Lovrencsics Gergő, while Botka Endre was amongst the starters.
The game started with conceding an unlucky goal. Iceland finished a free-kick, which the Hungarian goalkeeper, Gulácsi Péter first saved, but then the ball slipped away from his hands. The advantage of the away team was kept throughout the game, until the 88th minute, in which Hungary evened the scoreline! Nego Loic put the ball in the back of the net.
Shortly after, in the 90th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai shot the ball from near the penalty box into the bottom left corner of the goal. Hungary took the lead!
The last 2 minutes turned the scoreline around completely. With a fantastic finish, Hungary qualified for the European Championship again!
Our defenseman Botka Endre said the following after the victory: "I could feel with the whole team that the qualification will happen, there simply couldn’t have been any other scenario for this match. There was a dangerous situation in the first half and I was able to save, Fityó (Attila Fiola) alerted me in time so I could react. Besides, Iceland did not have a similar situation."
He added that it seems hard to further upraise this year after reaching the Champions League group stage with Ferencváros and qualifying for the European Championship with the national team.
The European Championship qualifiers also brought a club-record to FTC, since Fradi has never had three players in three different national teams reaching the tournament.
