In the top match of the 28th round of the Fizz League, our defending champion soccer team took the field as the visiting team against DVSC. A nearly sold-out crowd of 16,000 spectators and sunny weather greeted the teams on Easter Sunday.
First Half
In the opening minutes, play was mostly in the midfield, and the first big chance fell to Fradi. In the 7th minute, Franko Kovacevic broke into the box from the right side and took a shot, but his attempt was deflected right in front of Ádám Madarász, who immediately fired with his left foot, but his shot went wide of the goal. In the 14th minute, Mariusz Corbu headed Barnabás Nagy’s cross from the left over the bar. The Debrecen goalkeeper mishandled the clearance, but Kovacevic, pouncing on the ball, curled it just wide of the right post.
Ferencváros’s dominance on the field began to solidify. Another sign of this came when Yusuf Bamidele’s dangerous header narrowly missed the goal, though the ball ultimately deflected off a defender for a corner. In the 21st minute, Gergő Kocsis had the home side’s first chance, but the Loki midfielder shot over the bar from a tight angle.
In the 28th minute, Ferencváros missed a huge chance. Kovacevic broke free from the Debrecen defense, then passed to the onrushing Corbu inside the box, who immediately shot with his left foot but missed the goal. Ten minutes later, Tamás Szűcs tried his luck from distance, but Dénes Dibusz made a confident save.
In the 41st minute, Debrecen came close to scoring, but after a corner kick by Balázs Dzsudzsák, Josua Mejías headed the ball off the crossbar, and Yusuf cleared it away. There were no further chances in front of either goal before halftime, so the teams went into the break tied 0-0.
Second Half
The second half got off to a great start for Fradi. In the 53rd minute, Mohammed Abu Fani broke into the box from the left side after a through ball, carried the ball all the way to the byline, then rolled it back into the middle, where Corbu arrived in the second wave, and our midfielder slotted it into the empty net from six meters out. 0-1! That was our winter signing’s first goal for Ferencváros!
And seven minutes later, the second one came! Nagy made a brilliant run down the left flank, delivered a masterful cross into the middle, where the onrushing Corbu curled the ball into the bottom left corner with a beautiful touch. 0-2!
Kovacevic also came close to scoring in the 66th minute, but our Croatian forward hit the left post from a clear chance. Ferencváros played much better than their opponents in the second half, with Debrecen rarely making it into the area in front of Fradi’s goal.
In the 74th minute, Yusuf also hit the post. Our Nigerian forward took a long through ball past Erdélyi, who had come off his line at the wrong moment, and then shot on goal, but his attempt bounced off the right post. On the other end, Dibusz had to save a low shot from Vajda.
In the closing minutes, both head coaches tried to freshen up their teams with substitutions. DVSC tried to improve the score, but were unsuccessful. Thanks to Ferencváros’s excellent second-half performance and Corbu’s double, we won the derby 2-0 and temporarily took the lead in the standings.
Our team will face DVTK in the 29th round of the Fizz League on Friday, April 10, at 8:00 p.m.
