After the 1-0 defeat in Athens, Ferencváros, the defending Hungarian champions will host Olympiacos in the return leg of Round of 16 play-offs on Thursday 22 February at 21.00 in front of a full house. The European Football Association (UEFA) has appointed star French referee Clément Turpin, 41, who has experience in both the BL and UEL finals, to officiate the match.
Born on 16 May 1982 in Oullins, near Lyon, Clément Turpin has been refereeing since 2005 and made his French top-flight debut on 16 August 2008 in a match between Caen and Valenciennes (3-1). Since then, Turpin, 41, has refereed almost 600 matches in his career (576), including the 2016 European Championship, when he was immediately in charge of the Austria-Hungary group match, which the Hungarian side won 2-0. He also took part in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2020 European Championship.
He also has a strong track record in decisive matches, having captained Lille to a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the 2010/11 French Cup final two years after his debut in the French top flight.
He also conducted the French League Cup final in the 2014/15 season, where PSG won 2-0 with a double from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and a year later he was in charge of the Marseille-PSG (2-4) cup final, as well as the PSG-Monaco League Cup final (3-0) in 2018. In the 2020/21 season, he officiated the Villarreal-Manchester United Europa League final, where the Spanish team won on penalties, and a year later in his home city of Paris, he was in charge of the Liverpool-Real Madrid Champions League final, where Real Madrid won with a goal from Vinícius Jr. to claim their 14th CL title.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he also officiated the Brazil-South Korea Round of 16 encounter, where Brazil won 4-1.
