After a brilliant 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce, our Hungarian championship-winning, record-breaking men's soccer team continued its run in the Fizz League. In the 15th round, our team took the field at the home of its rival, Puskás Akadémia. Robbie Keane made several changes to the midweek starting lineup, this time putting his faith in Dibusz, Cissé, Raemaekers, Szalai, Makreckis, Kanikovszki, Julio Romao, Tóth, Nagy, Gruber, and Joseph.
First half
In the 14th minute, Makreckis left his man behind and crossed the ball into the middle, but it was too high for Joseph, who was arriving and rising. Neither team dared to take any serious risks, but there was a big battle for every ball in the field. Tóth organized and rotated the play brilliantly, while Barnabás Nagy constantly attacked the Felcsút defense.
In the 23rd minute, Puskás Akadémia made a substitution due to injury, with Haratiunian replacing Maceires. Three minutes later, Szalai cleared Nagy Zsolt's shot from the center of the box. Ferencváros had to wait until the 33rd minute for their first serious chance. Raemaekers rose highest to meet Tóth's free kick from the left and managed to head the ball, but Szappanos made a brilliant save to keep the score at 0-0.
There were chances at both ends, and in the 37th minute, Dárdai started on the right, cut inside, but his shot missed the goal. Moments later, Szappanos saved Tóth's attempt from a sharp angle, then managed to parry Gruber's rebound.
Second half
Robbie Keane made a change during the break, bringing on Bence Ötvös to replace Julio Romao.
We started the second half dynamically, immediately going on the attack, and within a minute we were already in front of Puskás' goal. In the 53rd minute, after a defensive lapse, Kanikovszki stormed the goal, but his shot was blocked, and then Szappanos saved the ball from the baseline with his foot.
A minute later, however, even he was helpless as Kanikovszki curled the ball into the goal from the edge of the box (0-1)! We kept up the momentum and put pressure on the home team's defense, which paid off when Gruber broke into the penalty area, but was stopped with a foul, resulting in a penalty. Gruber stepped up and made no mistake (0-2)!
Puskás also stepped up a gear, crossing the halfway line with great momentum and trying to create danger. In the 67th minute, Dárdai received a nice ball and, after controlling it, shot with his left foot across the far side. Although the linesman flagged for offside, the VAR review showed that Dárdai was not offside, so the goal stood (1-2).
Yusuf, O'Dowda, and Zachariassen came on for the last ten minutes, replacing Kanikovszki, Joseph, and Barnabás Nagy.
Eight minutes before the end of regular time, Yusuf found himself in a good position, but he was surrounded by three defenders and was unable to turn and shoot. We didn't let Puskás out of their own half, we pushed forward in the final minutes and had chances, but we couldn't convert them into goals, so we won 2-1 at the Pancho Arena.
Our men's soccer team will next play on Thursday, December 4, at Kisvárda in a rescheduled match from the fifth round.
