Our women's handball team played its final match of the season on Sunday evening against Szombathelyi KKA. Before the opening whistle, the club and its supporters bid farewell to the players leaving this summer: Darja Dmitrijeva, Orlane Kanor, Laura Glauser, Kinga Janurik after six years with the club, and Dragana Cvijic, who brought her playing career to a close with this match.
It was an emotional occasion. The crowd at the Elek Gyula Arena applauded the retiring line player for several minutes, there was hardly a dry eye in the building, and the biggest surprise for the guest of honour came when former teammate Andrea Lekic appeared on court to pay tribute to her.
The emotions seemed to affect the quality of the first half as well. Many were clearly still processing the bittersweet moments, and the game remained relatively close throughout the opening period. We took the lead for the first time in the sixth minute and generally held a two- or three-goal advantage from that point on, although the visitors did draw level at 9–9. We managed to raise the tempo again before halftime, and Gréta Márton found the net right on the buzzer to send us into the break with a three-goal lead.
After the restart, our concentration improved and the gap quickly began to grow, despite Szombathely calling a timeout in the 37th minute. We put together a six-goal run during that spell, stretching the advantage to eight goals and allowing us to play with greater freedom. Our players visibly tried to reward the supporters who had backed them throughout the season, looking for spectacular solutions and occasionally pulling off some audacious plays.
We never eased off, and the victory became increasingly emphatic as the match went on. In the closing minutes, Dragana Cvijic and Kinga Janurik almost seemed to compete for who would provide the final memorable moment of the evening. Following a save by our goalkeeper, it was Cvijic who scored the final goal of the match—and the final goal of her career—before being lifted into the air by her teammates.
The team and the departing players received a standing ovation. While this may not have been the most successful season in the club's history, the atmosphere once again demonstrated the strength of the community and the club itself.
